A “native” meeting room solution differs from BYOD in that it comprises dedicated room hardware with built-in, native VC software, typically controlled by a single tabletop touchscreen. In a BYOD solution your laptop becomes the brains of the meeting room. You connect your laptop to the meeting room peripherals (camera, microphones and speakers) either via a cable or wirelessly and use the software running on your laptop to open your meeting in whichever VC platform the meeting is using.
A BYOD solution enables you to use the AV equipment in your meeting rooms on any type of video conference meeting, but it relies on someone’s laptop driving the meeting and some meeting room features are lost.
A native solution, such as Microsoft Teams, provides simple, one-touch join, the highest quality video and audio, plus it enables the full features of the native software such as digital whiteboarding and seamless wireless content sharing.
The first step is to figure out the usage of video meetings in your organisation. If you use Teams 95% of the time a native solution is going to be better. But if your video meetings are spread across multiple VC platforms a BYOD solution may be better.
Equally it’s good to understand how your colleagues like to work – are they happy plugging in their laptop to drive the meeting, or would they prefer to the flexibility of not having to pass a cable / dongle around the room, or even have a video meeting without a laptop?
