HomeAway is one of the leading online holiday home rental marketplaces with more than 2,000,000 rental properties available in 190 countries.

Based in Austin, Texas, the company has offices around the globe.

01. The Challenge

HomeAway occupied 1 floor of Portland House, in the centre of Victoria, London, and the project was part of the expansion onto another floor, whilst refurbishing their current space. They had existing AV systems which were outdated, however the key fundamentals worked.

After a consultation period, MVS were chosen as the preferred supplier and instructed to work with the firm’s Texas based global IT Project Manager to come up with the perfect AV solution for the London office.

02. The Solution

A standardised approach for ease of use

The total project which later expanded to a third floor, covered 30,000 sq ft of office space, over a 7 month programme. Working alongside the clients fit out contractor, MVS were involved in a lot of the design works before installations began on site, issuing CAD elevations of screens, for recess details.

One of the key elements of the installation was that all the AV equipment was standardised throughout the office. This approach enables staff to go into any meeting room around the world and immediately know how the systems would work, without having to be trained on various types of hardware.

Expert technology for high performance AV

The 10 main meeting rooms were equipped with 2 Samsung DM65E screens, connected to Polycom Real Presence 500 Video Conferencing codecs, with HDMI connectivity to Extron Cable Cubbies in the desks. Polycom IP7000 conference phones were used throughout, as VOIP phones, and also microphones for the video conferencing system.

A custom made, bespoke solution

The 30 smaller huddle spaces, were equipped with single screens with HDMI connectivity. Every meeting room had an iPad booking system, running the clients chosen meeting room booking software, installed into custom made metal enclosures.

Finally, there were two much larger spaces where AV was used, these being “The Square”, which is a space used for weekly town hall meetings, and a 30 seater training space.

Both of these spaces had 2 Samsung DM75E screens installed, with Polycom Real Presence 700 Codec with 2 Polycom Eagle Eye IV 12x Zoom cameras. All video was handled via a 8×8 Digital Media Matrix, with inputs coming in from various digital media input plates. There were also points for the client to connect confidence monitors on portable Chief trolleys.

The audio side of the system had Shure Wireless Microflex system, with a number of handheld and head-worn microphones, with Biamp Bexia VC DSP.

Crestron Control was used via a 7” touch panel, alongside an iPad.

Effortless and future proof

Now their AV equipment has been installed, staff at HomeAway are easily making and receiving video calls with offices around the world. The simple to use AV equipment throughout the office means that staff do not waste time and can effortlessly present and communicate to clients and colleagues.

HomeAway’s office is an example of how standardised AV deployments really do work. It’s not at all complicated to use, and you never walk into an areas and feel like you are bombarded with technology. What they have works incredibly well, and everyone is able to use it.

They have since given MVS some extra jobs to complete installations in meeting and interview rooms around London and are broadening to work with other offices around the world. MVS has a great relationship with HomeAway and is now considered as a partner for Europe.
